-The Lead: The Assumption College women's tennis team defeated the Yellow Jackets of American International College on the road on Tuesday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference match-up. The win boosts the Hounds to a perfect 2-0 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Assumption junior Valeria Sanchez (Carolina, P.R. / Colegio La Piedad) and senior Camille Latoni (San Juan, P.R. / Academia Maria Reina) paired up to defeat the sophomore duo of Sophie Roberge and Jordyn Isaac at No. 2 doubles, 6-4. Junior Veronica Op (Westford, Mass. / Westford Academy) and first year Aimee Figgins (Milford, Mass. / Hopedale Jr./Sr. High School) earned a second win for the Hounds at No. 3 doubles, shutting out Melissa Feilen and Nichara Condo, 6-0.
-Junior Meritxell Jimeno-Vincente and first year Mikaela Johnson earned the Yellow Jacket's lone doubles victory, edging Assumption junior Julia Chappell (Manchester, N.H. / Manchester Central) and senior Maria Monje (Worcester, Mass. / Holy Name), 6-3 at No. 1 doubles.
-Chappell was victorious in her singles match over Jimeno-Vicente in three sets. She took set one 6-4, was edged in set two 7-6 and cruised to a 10-4 victory in the third set. Johnson and Roberge earned wins for American International at No. 2 and No. 3 singles. Latoni cruised to victory at No. 4 singles, shutting out Isaac in the first set and allowing just one point in the second.
-Sanchez and sophomore Ana Escudero (Rockville, Md. / Richard Montgomery) did not let their opponents score a single point at No. 5 and No. 6 singles respectively.
-The Hounds are back in action over the weekend when they travel to Stonehill College on Saturday, September 21st for a 12:00 p.m. match. They are back at home on Sunday when they host LeMoyne at noon.
