THE BASICS

-The Lead: The Assumption College men's basketball team fell to the Penmen of Southern New Hampshire University in a Northeast-10 Conference contest on Saturday evening. The Hounds battled their way back from a 17-point deficit to outscore the Penmen, 33-29 in the second half, but ultimately fell by just two points in the final minute of action.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Senior Eamonn Joyce put up six points in a run that gave Southern New Hampshire an early eight-point lead in the first half, 12-4. The hosts pulled ahead by as many as 17 when sophomores Justin Lacy and Mikey Buscetto both hit three-pointers in an eight-point rally with under eight minutes to go in the first, 32-15.

-Assumption finished the half on a 17-6 run to pull back within six heading into the halftime break, 38-32. Red-shirt junior Malik Brown (Waldorf, Md. / Northpoint) put up eight points in the run to help close the gap for the Hounds.

-First year Isiah Gaiter (Meriden, Conn. / Sacred Heart High School / Huntington Prep) kicked off scoring in the second half with a basket from beyond the arc to bring Assumption within three, 38-35.

-After the Penmen pulled ahead by as many as 10 points again, sophomore Cal Connelly (Rochester, N.H. / Spaulding / Tilton) knocked down three free-throws and added another three points with a basket from behind the arc as the Hounds tied the game at 51-51 with 13:10 to play.

-Assumption took over the lead with an eight-point run that brought them under the eight-minute mark, 59-57. Brown added five points in the rally from two layups and a made free-throw. First year Kani Glover (Brockton, Mass. / Catholic Memorial / Bridgton Academy) and junior Matthew Kelly (North Potomac, Md. / Quince Orchard) hit back-to-back threes with under five minutes to play as the Hounds took a six-point edge over the Penmen, 65-59.

-Southern New Hampshire used six made free-throws in the final four minutes to capture the final two-point victory, 67-65.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

-Brown led the Hounds with 22 points and added a team-high nine rebounds in the setback. Kelly finished the night with 16 points while Connelly rounded out double-digit scoring with 13 points.

-Joyce led the Penmen with 22 points and nine rebounds. Junior Michael Almonacy added 13 points in the victory and went 3-for-7 from three-point range. Senior Shawn Montague grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds for the hosts.

-Assumption finished shooting 34.4% (22-for-64) from the field and went 6-for-21 from three-point range. Southern New Hampshire shot 43.4% (23-for-53) from field goal range and finished 8-for-28 from behind the arc.

-The Hounds shot 75% from the free-throw line while the Penmen finished shooting 81.3% from the charity stripe.

-Assumption outrebounded Southern New Hampshire, 42-32.

-The game saw three ties and two lead changes.
