Final Second Shot Lifts Owls Over Men's Basketball

THE BASICS

-Score: Southern Connecticut State University 69, Assumption College 67

-The Lead: The Assumption College men's basketball team dropped to the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University in a Northeast-10 Conference contest, on the road, on Tuesday evening. The Hounds led by as many as 19 points in the second half, before the Owls went on a 24-4 run in the final seven minutes to capture the 69-67 victory. Freshman Levar Allen grabbed his own rebound after a missed free-throw and hit a buzzer-beating jumper to lift the hosts to victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-The Hounds used an eight-point rally, including a three from junior Matthew Kelly (North Potomac, Md. / Quince Orchard), to pull ahead 21-7 with under 10 minutes on the clock in the first half.

-Southern Connecticut outscored Assumption 16-8 over the final 10 minutes to pull within six heading into the halftime break, 29-23.

-Red-shirt junior Isaiah Boissard led the Owls in scoring with 16 points through the first 20 minutes.

-Kelly led the Hounds in the first half with eight points and Cal Connelly (Rochester, N.H. / Spaulding / Tilton) hit two baskets from beyond the arc to add six points in the first.

-Assumption used five points from Kelly and a three by Connelly in the opening two minutes of the second half to take a 12-point lead, 37-25. Red-shirt junior Malik Brown (Waldorf, Md. / Northpoint) hit a jumper and senior Branislav Vujadinovic (Belgrade, Serbia / St. Joseph) hit a three-pointer to extend their lead to 17 with 16:56 on the clock, 42-25.

-The Owls pulled back within three when junior C.J. Seaforth hit two three pointers and senior Taurus Adams II added a basket from behind the arc with under three minutes to play, 67-61. Seaforth added a layup to the rally to bring Southern Connecticut within one with 1:22 on the clock.

-Allen went to the free-throw line for two shots with two seconds on the clock. He made his first basket to tie the game, 67-67. When he missed the second shot, he grabbed his own rebound and made a buzzer-beating layup to give the Owls the final 69-67 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

-Connelly led Assumption in scoring with 19 points. Kelly finished with 13 points and a team-leading seven rebounds and five assists. First year Isiah Gaiter (Meriden, Conn. / Sacred Heart High School / Huntington Prep) rounded out double-digit scoring for the Hounds with 11 points.

-Boissard led the Owls with 21 points. Junior Greg Jones finished with a double-double, putting up 14 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Adams II and Seaforth both added 12 points in the victory.

-Assumption shot 44.1% (26-for-59) from field goal range and went 10-for-29 from three-point range. Southern Connecticut shot 40.3% (27-for-67) from the field and went 8-for-34 from beyond the arc.

-The Owls outrebounded the Hounds 42-36.

-Assumption went 5-for-9 (55.6%) from the free throw line while the hosts went 7-for-8 (87.5%)
