-The Lead: The Assumption College baseball team picked up their fourth win of the season, and third straight win in Florida, with a 17-13 final at Nova Southeastern today.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Assumption put up four runs in the first inning, including a three-run homer to left field by senior Matt Lonardo (Cranston, R.I. / Cranston / URI). The Sharks got one back in the bottom of the first and third, but the Hounds used a two-RBI double to right center by senior R.J. Libby (Middleton, Mass. / Bishop Fenwick) to pull ahead 7-2 in the top of the fourth.
-Assumption added four more runs in the top of the sixth, with a two RBI double down the left field line by junior Dillon Koster (Woburn, Mass. / Woburn / Marist College) and an RBI single by Lonardo for the 11-2 advantage.
-The Sharks closed the gap to a four-run difference in the bottom of the sixth inning. They used four hits to score five runs, including two RBIs for sophomore Duncan Pastore and first year Tyler Epstein, and trailed 11-7 at the end of six.
-The Hounds extended their lead back to 10 with six runs in the top of the seventh. Graduate student Philip Gaines (Cambridge, Mass. / Cambridge Rindge & Latin) homered to left field for three RBIs and the 17-7 lead.
-Nova Southeastern made a bid at a comeback with six runs over the final 2.5 innings, including a two-out grand slam by senior Andrew Labosky in the bottom of the ninth. The Hounds got the final out, leaving a runner stranded, for the final 17-13 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Koster went 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs and three runs scored. Lonardo finished the day 2-for-4 with four RBIs and one run scored. Sophomore Connor Wironen (Leominster, Mass. / Saint Bernard's) was 4-for-4 with five runs scored in the victory.
-The Hounds put up 14 total hits on the day while the Sharks combined for 15 hits.
-Sophomore MacGuire O'Sullivan (Durham, Conn. / Coginchaug Regional) earned the win on the mound for Assumption. He pitched 5.2 innings, allowed seven hits, six runs scored, and struck out three batters as he improves to 1-2 on the season.
-Senior Matt Ornelas falls to 1-2 on the season as he pitched two innings for the Sharks, allowed five hits, five runs scored, and struck out three batters.
-Assumption takes on Malone University on March 9th at Rollins College at 4:00 p.m.
