Baseball Splits in Season Opening Doubleheader

THE BASICS

-Score Game #1: Assumption College 6, Frostburg College 4

-Score Game #2: East Stroudsburg University 9, Assumption College 1

-Records: Assumption (1-1), Frostburg (0-3), East Stroudsburg (4-1)

-Location: Cary, N.C. (USA Baseball National Training Complex at Thomas Brooks Park)

-The Lead: The Assumption College baseball team defeated the Bobcats of Frostburg College in their opening game of the 2020 season. The Hounds fell to the Warriors of East Stroudsburg University in game two of the day. The games were played at the Team USA Complex in Cary, N.C.

GAME #1: Assumption 6, Frostburg 4

HOW IT HAPPENED

-After two scoreless innings, Assumption put up four runs in the top of the third. Sophomore Connor Wironen (Leominster, Mass. / Saint Bernard's) led off with a double to right field. Senior R.J. Libby (Middleton, Mass. / Bishop Fenwick) got on base on a Frostburg error and his classmate Derek Adamson (Chelmsford, Mass. / Chelmsford) was hit by a pitch in his at bat to load the bases. Sophomore Jake Hamel (Uxbridge, Mass. / Saint John's) used a sacrifice fly ball to score Wironen (1-0). With two outs on the board Libby came home on another error by the Bobcats (2-0). Junior Dillon Zona (Shrewsbury, Mass. / Shrewsbury) earned two RBIs with a double to center field to send senior Matt Schneider (Dalton, Mass. / Wahconah Regional) and Adamson across home plate (4-0).

-Frostburg responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. With two outs, junior Bret Fogle doubled to right field to score his classmate Andy Iglesias and senior Mitch Fyffe. Junior Jared Mouton singled to left to score Fogle and bring the Bobcats within one (4-3).

-Frostburg tied the game in the bottom of the fifth when Fyffe sent first year AJ Campbell home with an RBI single to left field.

-Assumption used two runs with two outs in the top of the sixth to capture the 6-4 victory. Hamel put the Hounds up 5-4 when he singled to centerfield to score senior Jared Brescia (Brentwood, N.H. / Exeter). Schneider earned an RBI when he walked and Libby came home for the sixth, and final run of the game.

INISDE THE NUMBERS

-Zona led the Hounds at the plate going 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Hamel went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Schneider finished 1-for-3 with one RBI.

-Fogle led Frostburg going 2-for-4 with two RBIs in the setback.

-Junior Cole Chudoba (Oxford, Conn. / Oxford) pitched five innings for Assumption. He allowed five hits and four runs scored, just one earned, and struck out five batters. Freshman Jack Choate (North Grafton, Mass. / Westborough) earned the win on the mound for the Hounds as he went four innings and struck out six batters.

-First year Ben Vok pitched five innings for Frostburg and allowed five hits and four runs scored (0 earned). He struck out four batters. Senior Franco Velasquez falls to 0-1 on the season as he pitched 0.2 innings and allowed two runs scored.

GAME #2: East Stroudsburg 9, Assumption 1

HOW IT HAPPENED

-The Warriors scored six runs through the opening two innings of action against the Greyhounds. Junior Brainy Rojas, senior Anthony Torreullas, and senior CJ Lopez each tallied two hits each in the contest.

-The Warriors provided Voss with early offense as ESU plated three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Junior Brock Kauffman laced a triple into left field to plate a pair of runners and give ESU a 3-0 advantage.

-ESU loaded the bases in the bottom of the second inning following a pair of walks and a single from Lopez. Senior Carson Freeman gave the Warriors a 4-0 lead with a run-scoring single that scored senior Joey Paolini. Torreullas added his second RBI of the contest with a sacrifice fly to center field that allowed Lopez to score and make it 5-0.

- Rojas notched his second hit of the contest in the bottom of the fifth inning as his single scored two runs to increase the Warriors' lead to 9-0. Sophomore Justin Guidos would take over on the mound for ESU to start sixth inning for the Warriors. Guidos fanned three batters in the inning after issuing a pair of walks and yielding one hit.

-Assumption tallied its lone run of the contest in the top of the seventh inning when Hamel singled with a pair of runners on base and scored Libby.

-Senior reliever CJ Gonzales tossed the final two innings out of the bullpen for the Warriors and recorded four strikeouts. Gonzales would get back-to-back strikeouts in the eighth inning after allowing a one-out base runner. He fanned the first two batters of the ninth inning before Assumption added a double from freshman Gianni Fanelli (Berlin, Conn. / Berlin) to put a runner on base. A ground out to shortstop would end the game and preserve the 9-1 victory for ESU.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

-Voss, Guidos, and Gonzales limited Assumption to three hits in the contest and tallied 18 strikeouts. Seven different hitters notched at least one hit in the contest for the Warriors as Torreullas and Kauffman added a triple each, while Lopez tallied a double.

-Zona, Hamel and Fanelli all recorded hits for the Hounds. Hamel earned Assumption's lone RBI of the game.

-Sophomore Patrick Harrington (Bedford, N.H. / Bedford) falls to 0-1 on the season as he went five innings and struck out five batters in the setback for the Hounds.

-Assumption is back in action on Sunday, February 16th when they take on Mansfield College in a doubleheader at the Team USA Complex in Cary, N.C. Game one is set for a 10:00 a.m. start.
