Assumption Drops A Pair At Stonehill

THE BASICS:

- Score: Pitt-Johnstown 3, Assumption 2 (Match 1); Stonehill 3, Assumption 0 (Match 2)

- Records: Pitt-Johnstown (3-2), Stonehill (5-1), Assumption (1-5)

- Location: Easton, Mass. (Merkert Gymnasium)

- The Lead: The Hounds started the day off strong with winning the first set and taking the first match against Pitt-Johnstown to five sets. Assumption came up short and fell 3-2 to Pitt-Johnstown and did not recover and lost 3-0 to Stonehill.

MATCH 1: PITT-JOHNSTOWN

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- The first set was a back-and-forth battle with no one gaining more than a six-point lead, which the Mountain Cats held at 14-8. The Hounds fought back and took the set to 27 points where Assumption came out victorious 27-25.

- Pitt-Johnstown dominated the second set from the start with a 10-2 lead. The Mountain Cats kept advancing to a 15-3 lead and eventually won the second set 25-10. The third set was much like the first where neither team took a significant lead until the end. The Hounds bested Pitt-Johnstown and took the third set 25-22.

- The Mountain Cats took control of the fourth set early only for the Hounds to come back and tie it at eight apiece. Pitt-Johnstown dominated after that and clawed their way to a fifth set with a 25-16 victory in the fourth. The Mountain Cats continued their momentum in the fifth and won the set 15-10 and the match 3-2.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Mary Campbell (Plainville, Mass./Bishop Feehan) and Alana Hruska (Marlborough, Conn./RHAM) both earned 11 kills apiece while Ariana Orcera (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Colegio Marista) added eight.

- Alexandra Krawczyk (East Patchogue, N.Y./Bellport) led with 19 digs and Kyra Belden (Hollis, N.H./Hollis-Brookline High School) earned 11.

- Belden earned a double-double with 27 assists and 11 digs while Danielle Zarcone (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown High School West) added 13 assists.

MATCH 2: STONEHILL

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Stonehill jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first set forcing the Hounds to take a timeout. After the timeout, Assumption started a comeback effort scoring four-straight points to get within three (12-9). Neither team strung together more than three points, but Stonehill eventually took the 25-20 win.

- The Skyhawks took an early lead in the second set as well before the Hounds tied it up at nine apiece and then again at thirteens. Stonehill scored five-straight to take a 22-19 win and sealed the 25-20 second set win.

- In the third set, the two teams traded points before the Skyhawks went on a five-point run to take a ten-point lead (21-11). The Hounds were unable to recover from the deficit, and lost the third set 25-19 and the match 3-0.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Hruska led the Hounds with eight kills while Orcera, Tess Haller (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth) and Lara Herrero (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) added six apiece.

- Belden contributed a 13 assist and eight dig performance while Laine Peterson (Hawthorne, N.Y./Westlake) added 11 digs and Krawczyk added 14.

- The Hounds are back on the court Friday, September 20 at American International against Bridgeport at 11:00 a.m. and Saint Anselm at 3:00 p.m.
