WORCESTER, Mass. – Following the most successful outdoor season in program history, women's track and field had eight student-athletes combine for a school-record 15 All-Region selections as announced by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Tuesday.
Senior Abby Jones (Arlington, Mass. / Arlington) and juniors Emily Casella (Athol, Mass. / Athol) and Kialeigh Marston (Standish, Maine / Bonny Eagle) were each named All-Region in three different events. Freshman Victoria Steffon (Holden, Mass. / Wachusett Regional) had a pair of All-Region honors, while Emma Santee (Westerly, R.I. / Westerly), Caroline Leonard (Northborough, Mass. / Algonquin), Amelie Legg (Hamden, N.Y. / Delaware Academy) and Mikaylah Schwartz (Dracut, Mass. / Dracut) each had one selection. The All-Region awards recognize each region's top five performers in individual events and top three teams in relay events. The 15 selections are a new school record for the outdoor season, breaking the previous mark of 12 set last year.
Jones was named All-Region in at least two events for the fourth straight season, twice during indoor and twice during her outdoor season. Jones was the region's leader in both the heptathlon and the long jump. She set her heptathlon mark at the NEICAAA Championships, with a school-record total of 4988 which is the 16th best in the nation. In the long jump, her leap of 6.00 meters is tied for 10th in the country. Jones was fourth in the high jump with her mark of 1.69 meters, which she set at the NEICAAA Championships. Next week, Jones will compete in both the heptathlon and long jump at the NCAA Championships
Casella had a breakthrough season in earning All-Region honors the shot put, javelin and the discus. She finished second in the region in shot put, breaking her own school record multiple times while finishing with a distance of 14.23 meters. Casella was third in javelin with a throw of 39.79 meters and finished fourth in the discus with her school-record heave of 42.28 meters. This year she was named the Most Outstanding Field Performer at the NE10 Championships after winning discus while finishing second in shot put and javelin.
Marston dominated throughout the outdoor season as she was named All-Region in the 1500 meters, 5000 meters and then 3000 meter steeplechase, owning the top time in the region for each of the three events. She used a school-record time of 4:34.28 to win the NE10 Title in the 1500 meters and then won the 5000 meters NE10 crown with her time of 17:24.75. Marston also earned the NE10 Title in the steeplechase, but saved her best for the NEICAAA Championships. She broke her own school record by 11 seconds with a time of 10:35.74, qualifying for the NCAA Championships in the process.
Steffon continued her outstanding freshman season with All-Region selections in the 100 and the 200 meter events. She took third at the NE10 Championships and then second at the NEICAAA Championships with a school-record time of 11.97 seconds. It was the second-best time in the region. In the 200, Steffon had the fifth fastest time in the region after placing second in the NE10 Championships with her time of 24.84 seconds.
Leonard secured her second All-Region honors in the javelin by posting the best throw in the region. She won the NE10 Title in the event during the season, though her best throw of the year was at the Black and Gold Invitational, with a toss of 42.32 meters. Legg, meanwhile, earned All-Region honors in the pole vault for the second time overall and first during the outdoor season. Her best vault of the year came at the Yellow Jacket Invitational with a mark of 3.20 meters, which was fifth-best in the region.
Santee secured All-Region honors in the heptathlon for the second straight year. She was also an All-Region selection in the pentathlon during the indoor season. Santee concluded the season ranked second in the region with her score of 4240 points, which she accumulated at the NE10 Championships. At the Championships she also took second in the event, behind Jones. Schwartz earned All-Region honors for the second time in her career in the shot put. She finished fifth in the region in the shot put, following her throw of 12.73 meters at the Black & Gold Invitational on Mar. 29.
