Women's Tennis Sweeps Division I Holy Cross

THE BASICS

-The Lead: The Assumption College women's tennis team blanked the Division I Holy Cross Crusaders in a non-conference match-up at home on Wednesday afternoon. The Hounds improve to 3-2 overall this season while Holy Cross slips to 2-4. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Junior Julia Chappell (Manchester, N.H. / Manchester Central) and senior Maria Monje (Worcester, Mass. / Holy Name) paired up at No. 1 doubles to defeat Holy Cross sophomores Maddie DeNucci and Sophia Papa, 6-2. Chappell took down DeNucci in her singles match by set scores of 6-4 and 7-5. Monje competed again with Papa at No. 2 singles and took the hard-fought victory in three sets, 6-4, 7-5, 10-7. 

-Assumption junior Valeria Sanchez (Carolina, P.R. / Colegio La Piedad) and senior Camille Latoni (San Juan, P.R. / Academia Maria Rena) nearly shut out sophomore Elizabeth Gibbons and fisrt year Melissa Caiola at No. 2 doubles, taking the final 6-1 victory. Junior Veronica Op (Westford, Mass. / Westford Academy) and sophomore Ana Escudero (Rockville, Md. / Richard Montgomery) finished out the doubles sweep with a 6-2 defeat over senior Eleanor Fulghum and sophomore Elena Olsen.

-First year Aimee Figgins (Milford, Mass. / Hopedale Jr./Sr. High School) earned her first collegiate singles victory at No. 3 singles for the Hounds. She defeated Gibbons, 6-2 and 6-3. 

-Sanchez and Caiola met again at No. 4 singles with Sanchez pulling away with the two set victory, 6-1 and 6-4.

-Escudero took down Fulghum, 6-1 and 6-2 at No. 5 singles and Op finished out the singles sweep with a 6-0, 6-1 finish over Holy Cross freshman Sara Schmitt.

UP NEXT

-The Hounds are back at home on Sunday, September 29th when they host Saint Michael's College in a Northeast-10 conference contest at 12:00 p.m.
