Hounds Come Up Short In Offensive Battle With No. 18 Stonehill

THE BASICS:

- Records: No. 18 Stonehill (10-3-1, 7-1-1 NE10), Assumption (7-4-1, 4-4-1 NE10)

- The Lead: In an action-packed, offensive affair, the No. 18 Stonehill Skyhawks took down the Assumption Greyhounds 6-3 on Tuesday evening, thanks to a hat-trick by Kayla Henry and another two goals by Alex Giardina.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

-Henry struck twice before halftime, netting both goals less than two minutes apart. With her team up 1-0, Henry placed two strong shots on net, getting past a leaping Alexis Nason (Saco, Maine / Thornton Academy) to put her team up by three. Giardina then netted her first goal of the game at the 37:15 mark, 1:54 after Henry scored her second, to put her team up 4-0 at half.

-The Hounds came roaring back to begin the second half though. At the 47:31 mark, just 2:31 into the second half, Brooke Shatney (Weare, N.H. / John Stark Regional) scored on a long pass from teammate Diana Bruggeman (Natick, Mass. / Natick), putting a bending kick into the corner of the net to pull within three, 4-1. Bruggeman then scored one herself coming off a corner kick just 4:37 later, putting her team within two at 4-2.

-Stonehill then came roaring back with a goal by Giardina, her second of the game, at the 59:33 mark to put her team back up by three. Henry then netted her third goal of the game on a penalty kick at the 61:29 mark, moving the Skyhawk's lead back to four, 6-2. Bruggeman than scored her second goal of the game at the 81:39 to pull back for the 6-3 final.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

-Assumption outshot the Skyhawks 21-20 and produced 11 corners to Stonehill's four. Shatney had a team-high four shots for the Hounds.

-Bruggeman's multi-goal game was the first of her collegiate career, also adding one assist for five points throughout the game. She now has a team-high five goals on the season. Shatney's goal gives her three on the season. She has added at least one point in four of her last six games.

-Nason started for the Hounds and made five saves, but fell to 5-4-1 on the year. Katie Hammer (Greenlawn, N.Y. / Harborfields) played the second half for Assumption and made three saves. Kaitlin Brown made seven saves for Stonehill and improved to 10-3-1 on the year.
