No. 17 Women’s Lacrosse Takes Care of AIC 22-8

THE BASICS:

- Score: No. 17 Assumption 22, AIC 8

- Records: Assumption (9-3, 5-3 NE10), AIC (3-10, 1-8 NE10)

- Location: Springfield, Mass. (Abdow Field)                                                                           

- The Lead: No. 17 Assumption jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the opening five minutes and led 14-5 at the half on the way to a dominant 22-8 victory over American International on Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Olivia Angelo (Miller Place, N.Y. / Miller Place) gave the Hounds a 1-0 lead at 28:37 and Kailyn Hart (Cohoes, N.Y. / Shaker) followed just 17 seconds later. Assumption added three more goals, including a Callie Dwyer (Merrimack, N.H. / Merrimack) free position at 24:48 for the 5-0 advantage. AIC scored twice in the next four minutes but three more Hound goals stretched the lead to 8-2 through 18 minutes of action.

- The Yellow Jackets had consecutive goals to trim the deficit to 8-4, before Angelo scored twice in a three-minute span for the 10-4 lead. Hart added two more goals, while Spath and Brooke Burdon (Bedford, N.H. / Bedford) each had one for the eventual 14-5 lead at the half.

- Assumption scored four times in the first ten minutes of the second half to push its lead to 18-5. The Yellow Jackets answered back with three of the next four goals, to close it to 19-8. However, Angelo, Helen Tautkus (Laconia, N.H. / Laconia) and Dwyer capped off the scoring in the final ten minutes of action for the 22-8 final.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Assumption outshot AIC 33-19 in the contest while picking up nine more ground balls (17-8) and recording more caused turnovers (14-7). The Yellow Jackets did win one more draw control (15-14).

- Emily Spath (Franklin, Mass. / Franklin) tied her own school record with seven assists while adding three goals for ten points. Sarah Reilly (Fairfield, Conn. / Fairfield-Warde) finished with four goals, three assists, three draws and a pair of caused turnovers while Angelo had six points on five goals and one assist. Reilly's four assists gave her 76 for her career, setting a new program record. Hart scored six times to reach 101 career goals, becoming the seventh player in program history to surpass 100 goals.

- Defensively, Marran Oakman (Kennebunk, Maine / Kennebunk) came through with six draws, five ground balls and three caused turnovers. Grace McDermott (Franklin, Mass. / Franklin) added two ground balls, two draws and two caused turnovers. Allie Collins (Natick, Mass. / Natick) earned the victory in net, allowing eight goals with five saves. Chelsea Davis took the loss as she gave up 18 goals while making four saves.
