Women's Golf Completes NE-10 Championship; Ruggieri Makes Hole in One

THE BASICS:

-The Lead: The Assumption College women's golf team finished its first ever Northeast-10 Conference Championship this weekend at the Village Club of Sands Point in Sands Point, N.Y. Sophomore Alyssa Ruggieri (Cranston, R.I. / Cranston West) notched her first hole in one on Friday on hole five of the course.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

-The Hounds finished their first appearance at the NE-10 Championships in fifth place of five teams, posting a score of 828 over two rounds. 

-Senior Emily Gonsalves (Greenville, R.I. / Smithfield) led Assumption with a two-round total of 191 and placed 18th overall. She was the only Hound to shoot below 100 in both rounds, posting 99 strokes in round one and shaving off seven strokes in round two (92). 

-Ruggieri placed 24th overall and finished second for the Hounds. She carded a 103 in round one and a 106 in round two for a two-day total of 209.

-Freshman Casey Gurlitz (Auburn, Mass. / Auburn), senior Ally Fillebrown (Ayer, Mass. / Ayer Shirley Regional) and senior Jacey Copes (Attleboro, Mass. / Attleboro) rounded out the Assumption squad. Gurlitz and Fillebrown tied for 25th-place while Copes came in 28th. 

-Merrimack claimed its second-straight title this season with a final score of 638. Franklin Pierce followed in second (689) while Le Moyne (708) and Southern New Hampshire (727) finished in third and fourth, respectively.

 

BEHIND THE NUMBERS:

-Two Greyhounds finished in the top 25 of the competition, Gonsalves (18th) and Ruggieri (24th).

-Ruggieri's hole in one on hole five on day one of NE-10 competition was the first of her career. Ruggieri was one of just five competitors to register an eagle on the weekend.

-Gurlitz notched a birdie on the weekend as one of just 16 competitors to do so.

-Gonsalves led the Hounds with five pars, followed by Fillebrown with four, Ruggieri with three and Gurlitz with two.

-Assumption returns to action on Sunday and Monday, Oct. 18-19 at the Franklin Pierce Shootout in Keene, N.H. at the Bretwood Golf Course.
