Women's Basketball Dominates in Conference Victory Over Purple Knights

THE BASICS

-The Lead: The Assumption College women's basketball team used a strong offense and tough defense to defeat the Purple Knights of Saint Michael's College, 53-40, in a Northeast-10 Conference contest on Tuesday evening. Assumption led by as many as 27 points in the third period and held on through the final 10 minutes, for the 13-point victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-The Hounds outscored Saint Michael's 14-11 in the first quarter. Senior Brianna Capacchione (Washington Township, N.J. / Washington Township) hit a basket from behind the arc and junior Temi Falayi (  Peabody, Mass. / St. Mary's) made a drive to the basket to give Assumption the 12-7 lead with 4:24 on the clock. Sophomore Emma Macdonough hit a jumper before the buzzer to bring the Purple Knights within three at the end of the first, 14-11.

-Saint Michael's opened scoring in the second quarter with a fast break layup made by junior Nicole Anderson (14-13). Sophomore Emme Poulin (South Portland, Maine / Cheverus High School) made a three-pointer to spark a 10-point run by the Hounds as they pulled ahead, 24-13 with 3:05 on the clock. Assumption outscored the Purple Knight's 4-1 in the final three minutes to take a 28-14 advantage into the halftime break.

-The Hounds pulled ahead by as many as 27 in the third period. Capacchione put up 12 points as the Hounds went on a 16-3 run to pull ahead 44-17 with 4:18 on the clock. Anderson and senior Cassandra Falone hit back-to-back jumpers to bring the Purple Knights within 23 heading into the final 10 minutes, 44-21.

-Anderson made a basket from beyond the arc for Saint Michael's to kick-off scoring in the fourth period (45-24). The Purple Knights used an eight-point run, and outscored Assumption 19-8 in the fourth, to pull within 13, but the Hounds held on for the final 53-40 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

-Capacchione led the Hounds to victory with 19 points on the night. Falayi finished with a double-double as she put up 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

-Anderson led Saint Michael's in scoring with nine points. Senior Taylor Miller finished the night with seven points and a team-leading 11 rebounds.

-Assumption finished shooting 35.7% (20-for-56) from the field and went 5-for-14 from three-point range. Saint Michael's shot 26.8% (15-for-56) from field goal range and went 2-for-25 from beyond the arc.

-The Hounds finished shooting 44.4% (8-for-18) from the free throw line while the Purple Knights shot 80% (8-for-10) from the charity stripe.

-Saint Michael's edged Assumption in rebounding, 42-41.

-The Hounds forced 23 turnovers by the Purple Knights and turned those into 19 points of their own.
