Kevin Hack Wins Decathlon With School-Record Total on Friday

THE BASICS:

- Event: Northeast Combined Events Challenge
- Dates: April 11-12, 2019
- Location: New Haven, Conn. (SCSU)

- The Lead: Junior Kevin Hack (Uxbridge, Mass. / Nipmuc) had a career-best performance in the decathlon at the Northeast Combined Events Challenge, breaking the previous school record by over 300 points and winning the event outright on Friday.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Hack built on his impressive Thursday performance in which he broke a 45-year old record in the high jump, to win the decathlon by almost 150 points with a new school record of 6,444 points. It shattered the previous record by 345 points, which he set last year at the NE10 Championships. It is also one of the 20 best point totals in all of Division II this year and an NCAA Provisional mark.

- Sophomore Cameron Donoghue (Yarmouth Port, Mass. / Barnstable) placed third overall in the decathlon with 6,200 points, which also surpassed the previous school record. Freshman Joseph Jepsen (Sutton, Mass. / Sutton) improved from 16th on the opening day to 12th while Derek Girouard (Chicopee, Mass. / Chicopee) went up one spot to 13th from the first day.

- Hack won the hurdles in 15.27 seconds while Donoghue was sixth in 16.26. Hack then took third in the discus with a throw of 32.23 meters, with Donoghue closed behind in fifth with his hurl of 31.69 meters. Jepsen took 10th in the discus. Donoghue and Girouard tied for sixth in the pole vault with a height of 3.65 meters. Hack finished off the meet by winning the javelin with a toss of 50.55 meters while Jepsen was seventh.
