Four Records Fall at New England Track and Field Championships

Cambridge, Mass. (May 10) -- At the 2015 New England Outdoor Track and Field Championship, the Assumption College men's and women's track and field teams broke four school records as the Hounds capped off the regional championship. The women's team finished 24th out of 41 scoring teams, while the men's squad placed 34th out of 37 scoring teams in the event.

On the men's side, sophomore Darnell Butler (Hudson, Mass./Hudson) set the first school record on Friday as he ran a time of 10.83 in the 100 meters. The time broke the previous school record by .03 seconds, was his personal best by a .04-second margin and placed him 10th overall and third among Division II runners. He followed that with a 10th-place showing in the 200, crossing in 22.167 seconds to pull out 10th by a .003-second margin.

For the women, freshman Antonia Pagliuca (Peabody, Mass./Peabody Veteran's Memorial) crossed in 24th place overall and third among Division II runners as she ran a time of 18:19.27 to break the record by nearly a second. Capping off the remainder of the Friday action was a personal-best in the 100 meters by sophomore Joy Lima (Salem, Mass./Salem) as she finished 25th in a time of 12.70. In the javelin, freshman Megan Perrin (Watertown, Conn./Watertown) placed fourth overall and finished as the Division II champion as she threw 134 feet, four inches. Freshman Michaela Lievi (North Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) also took part in the competition, finished 23rd overall with a distance of 105 feet, seven inches.

Two records fell on the final day of competition, including the 4x100-meter relay mark as the team of sophomore Kevon Lumsden (Englewood, N.J./Dwight Morrow), senior Kyler Huffert (Woodstock, Vt./Woodstock Union), senior Darius Daniels (Clearwater, Fla./Tarpon) and Butler ran a time of 42.31 seconds. The finish broke the previous record by .32 seconds and placed the team fifth overall and second among Division II squads. For the women, sophomore Rachel Avard (Manchester, N.H./Manchester West) smashed her own record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as she ran 11:37.66 to finish 20th overall and third among Division II runners.

 Senior Tony Fierimonte (Northborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) reached the NCAA provisional qualifying time in yet another event as he ran a personal-best time of 3:50.87 seconds to finished second among Division II runners and seventh overall. The final track event was the women's 4x100 relay team of Lima, sophomore Krystal Kearns (Natick, Mass./Natick), junior Patty Malone (Wakefield, Mass./Wakefield) and junior Katelyn Corriveau (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) ran 50.51 to finish 23rd overall.

In the men's and women's shot put, the Hounds were led by a fifth-place finish by sophomore Gwen Sawyer (North Yarmouth, Maine/Greely) and a 20th-place showing from freshman Alex Cerbo (Cranston, R.I./Bishop Hendricken). Sawyer threw 42 feet, nine inches to place second among Division II throwers, while Cerbo was sixth amongst Division II finishers.

All-Region performers will be announced by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) early next week, along with the NCAA Division II National Championship field. That meet is set for later in May at Grand Valley State University in Michigan.
