Track and Field Competes at Yellow Jacket Invitational

Springfield, Mass. (April 5) -- The Assumption College men's and women's outdoor track and field teams competed at the Fifth Annual Yellow Jacket Invitational on Saturday afternoon, hosted by American International College. The women's team placed 10th out of 14 teams, while the men's squad came in 12th out of 15 teams. For the women, the team picked up 34 points, while the men's team compiled 20 points in the meet.

On the women's side, freshman Megan Perrin (Watertown, Conn./Watertown) picked up her second school record in as many weeks as she finished fourth in the high jump with a leap of four feet, nine inches. The mark was the record by two inches, a standard that stood for 12 years. Perrin also finished second in the javelin, finishing with a distance of 120 feet, five inches. Freshman Michaela Lievi (North Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) finished third in the javelin as well, throwing 114 feet, along with an eighth-place finish in the high jump at four feet, seven inches. Sophomore Gwen Sawyer (North Yarmouth, Maine/Greely) scored in both the shot put and discus, including a third-place showing in the shot with a throw of 40 feet, 4.25 inches. Sawyer also finished seventh in the discus, posting a throw of just over 105 feet.

On the track, sophomore Joy Lima (Salem, Mass./Salem) scored in both the 100 and 200-meter events. Lima finished seventh in the 100 in 13.08, followed by an eighth-place finish in the 200. Lima's time in the 200 was 26.63, missing the Assumption school record by just .03 seconds. The 4x100 meter relay team also scored in the meet with a sixth-place finish, crossing in a time of 53.28 seconds.

For the men, the team posted two third-place finishes and two other individual scoring finishes in the sprints. Senior Tony Fierimonte (Northborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) placed third overall in the 1,500 meters in 3:59.31, while the 4x100 meter relay team placed third overall and second in their heat with a time of 43.27 seconds. Sophomore Darnell Butler (Hudson, Mass./Hudson) finished fourth overall and third in his heat at 22.33 seconds, while sophomore Kevon Lumsden (Englewood, N.J./Dwight Morrow) placed sixth overall and second in his heat at 11.43.

Other top-10 finishes on the men's side came from freshmen Alex Cerbo (Cranston, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) and Jason Rice (North Andover, Mass./North Andover), with those showings coming in the hammer throw and discus. Cerbo finished 10th in the hammer with a throw of 139 feet, 4.5 inches, while Rice was 10th in the discus at 125 feet, eight inches.

Assumption is back in action on Saturday, April 11th as the Hounds travel to the Brown University Invitational in Providence, R.I.
