Three Records Fall for Men's Team at NE-10 Championship

Boston, Mass. (February 22) -- The Assumption College men's indoor track and field team set three school records at the Northeast-10 Conference Indoor Championship at the Reggie Lewis Center on Saturday, en route to a ninth-place team finish with a total of 22 points. The Hounds were picked ninth in the league's pre-championship coaches poll earlier in the week.

Senior Tony Fierimonte (Northborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) picked up two top-three finishes as he earned points in both the 3,000 and 5,000-meter races. In the 3,000, he finished second in the event with a time of 8:32.40 and in the 5,000, Fierimonte broke a 33-year old Assumption school record by nearly 17 seconds. Finishing in a time of 14:40.56, Fierimonte reached the NCAA provisional qualifying time for the event and broke the record set by Mike Cronin in 1982.

Records also fell for two freshmen as Derek Field (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) and Andrew Churchill (Hubbardston, Mass./Quabbin Regional) set school marks in the 500 meters and 60-meter hurdles, respectively. Field broke his own record in the 500 for the third straight weekend, finishing eighth overall in a time of 1:07.57 to break his previous mark by .42 seconds. In the hurdle prelims, Churchill broke the nine-second mark as he crossed in 8.97 to set the record by .04 seconds.

Freshman Alex Cerbo (Cranston, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) earned a fifth-place finish in the shot put as he posted a throw of 46 feet, 4.75 inches. He narrowly missed out on the top 10 in the weight throw, finishing 11th with a throw of 43 feet, 10.5 inches.

In the 4x400 relay, the Hounds picked up an eighth-place finish in 3:35.17 to miss the school record by a .56-second margin. The team consisted of sophomore Darnell Butler (Hudson, Mass./Hudson), senior Kyler Huffert (Woodstock, Vt./Woodstock Union), freshman Edgar Evan (Avon, Conn./Avon) and Fierimonte.

Assumption is back in action on the NEICCAAA Championship on February 26-27 as the meet is hosted at Boston University.
