Fierimonte, Field Set School Marks at Valentine Invitational

Boston, Mass. (February 15) -- Senior Tony Fierimonte (Northborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) and freshman Derek Field (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) set school records for the second straight week as the team competed at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The Hounds also sent a group to the Gordon Kelly Invitational, which was hosted by MIT at its indoor track in Cambridge.

In the mile on Saturday, Fierimonte crossed in a time of 4:10.35 to break his own school record by a 5.6-second margin as he also reached the NCAA provisional qualifying time by over two seconds. Field broke his own school mark in the 500 meters as well, finishing with a time of 1:07.99 to break the previous mark by .12 seconds. Fierimonte placed 44th overall in the event, while Field was 45th in the meet that featured schools from Divisions I, II and III.

Sophomore Darnell Butler (Hudson, Mass./Hudson) ran a time of 7.28 in the 60 meters, along with a 22.79 in the 200 meters. Freshman Alex Cerbo (Cranston, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) also competed at BU in the shot put and the weight throw. In the shot, he finished 26th with a throw of 46 feet, 3.5 inches, followed by a 31st-place finish in the weight throw with a toss of 46 feet, 11.5 inches.

At MIT, the Hounds posted eight top-10 finishes, including two in the mile as freshman Ian Flanagan (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro) and junior Alex Smith (Ellington, Conn./Ellington) placed fifth and 10th, respectively. Flanagan finished in a time of 4:37.43, while Smith crossed in 4:44.30. Assumption had two top-10 finishes in the 60-meter hurdles as well, led by a seventh-place showing in 9.19 by freshman Andrew Churchill (Hubbardston, Mass./Quabbin Regional). Sophomore Stephen Mendoza (Clinton, Mass./Clinton) finished 10th in the event as he finished in a time of 9.71 seconds.

Senior Kyler Huffert (Woodstock, Vt./Woodstock Union) finished eighth in both the 60 meters and 400-meter races, finishing in a time of 7.43 seconds in the 60 and 54.97 seconds in the 400. In the weight throw, sophomore Tim Jensen (Manchester, Conn./East Catholic) finished eighth with a throw of 39 feet, 3.75 inches, along with a ninth-place finish by Nathan Smith (Piermont, N.H./St. Johnsbury Academy) in the shot put with a 38-foot, 11.5-inch toss.

Assumption is back in action on Saturday, February 21st as the Hounds travels to the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, Mass. for the Northeast-10 Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship.
