Hounds in First After Day One of NE-10 Competition

THE BASICS:

-Event: 2016 Northeast-10 Championships 

-Results: 1st of 9 Teams

-Location: Worcester, Mass. (@ WPI)

-The Lead: The Assumption College women's swimming team finished day one of competition at the 2016 Northeast-10 Championships in first place on Thursday evening with a team score of 114. Assumption leads Southern Connecticut and Bentley, which are tied for second with 104 points apiece.

DAY 1 RESULTS

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

-In the first event of the evening, the 200 medley relay, the Hounds claimed third place for 36 team points. The squad, consisting of seniors Victoria Weber (Augusta, Maine / Cony) and Rachel Ferris (Stephentown, N.Y. / Berlin), sophomore Courtney Barr (Waltham, Mass. / Matignon) and junior Allie Wuerfl (Wayland, Mass. / Wayland), clocked a time of 1:47.17 to qualify for the NCAA B cut.

-Assumption's B squad in the 200 medley relay claimed the victory in their heat for 10th place overall and 20 team points. The foursome consisted of sophomore Niamh Morgan (Bettystown, Ireland / Sacred Heart School), junior Rachel Gagnon (Tolland, Conn. / Tolland) as well as freshmen Ali Petrozza (North Andover, Mass. / Austin Preparatory School) and Morgan Nicholls (East London, South Africa / Clarendon) and touched the wall in 1:50.11.

-The Hounds claimed the silver medal in the 800 freestyle relay with its time of 7:41.81 to qualify for the NCAA B cut and rack up 38 points for Assumption. The squad consisted of Morgan, freshman Shannon Quirk (Wakefield, Mass. / Wakefield Memorial), junior Tricia Lee (Norwood, Mass. / Norwood) and junior Rachel Lanam (Sebastian, Fla. / Sebastian River).

-In the B heat of the 800 freestyle relay, Assumption once again finished atop the competition, clocking a time of 7:53.82. Wuerfl, Petrozza, freshman Caroline Cole (Highland Mills, N.Y. / Monroe Woodbury) and sophomore Bella Omobono (Chelmsford, Mass. / Chelmsford) swam for the Hounds in the race.

 

BEHIND THE RESULTS:

-Lanam clocked a new personal-best time in her final leg of the 800 freestyle relay. The senior pulled the Hounds into second in the event, swimming her leg in 1:53.61, approximately two seconds faster than each of her teammates.

-In the 200 medley relay, Assumption's A squad finished just over a second behind the standing NE-10 record of 1:46.09 set in 2010. Last season, the Hounds won the event in 1:46.32,

-In the 800 freestyle relay, the Hounds' A squad finished just 1:11 shy of the NE-10 record set in 2007 by Southern Connecticut (7:40.70). Assumption earned the victory last season in 7:41.54.

 

UP NEXT:

-The 2016 Northeast-10 Championships will continue throughout the weekend and finish on Sunday. The squads will begin Friday's prelim competition at 10:15 a.m. before kicking off finals competition at 6 p.m. Both sessions will be broadcast LIVE on AssumptionGreyhounds.tv.
