Gagnon Named NE-10 Swimmer of the Week

Mansfield, Mass. (November 16) -- Junior Rachel Gagnon (Tolland, Conn. / Tolland) of the Assumption College swimming and diving team has been named Northeast-10 Swimmer of the Week following her impressive performance in the Hounds' win over Division I Sacred Heart on Saturday, the league announced Monday.

Gagnon helped lead the Hounds to their 177-93 victory over the Pioneers on Saturday, taking three first-place finishes. She claimed first in the 100 breaststroke with her time of 1:12.01 before notching another gold medal in the 200 breaststroke with her time of 2:37.66. Gagnon also helped the Hounds' 400 medley relay team to a victory to kick off the meet, clocking in at 4:12.31.

Sophomore Niamh Morgan (Bettystown, Ireland / Sacred Heart School) was also recognized by the league this week. She was named to the NE-10 Weekly Honor Roll following two NE-10 Swimmer of the Week honors this season. Morgan helped lead Assumption in its victory over Sacred Heart earning first place in the 200 backstroke with her time of 2:13.38 and in the 200 IM in 2:16.10. Morgan, who holds the Assumption program record in both events, was also the lead leg of the 400 medley relay squad that got the team out to a swift start.

The 400 medley relay squad, consisting of Gagnon and Morgan, along with freshman Kelsey Kozikowski (Berlin, Conn. / Berlin) and sophomore Carylyn Waite (Tampa, Fla. / Tampa Prep), was named NE-10 Relay Team of the Week for its' first-place performance.

Freshman Shannon Quirk (Wakefield, Mass. / Wakefield Memorial) was also named to the NE-10 Weekly Honor Roll this week for her performance that included a first-place victory in the 200 freestyle event with her season-best time of 1:58.66, as well as a win in the 500 freestyle in 5:17.49.

The Hounds' win over Sacred Heart marked their 12th consecutive victory at home at the Plourde Pool. Assumption has not lost a dual-meet at the Plourde since Nov. 18, 2011. The Hounds also continue to stay ranked in the top 25 in the nation by CollegeSwimming.com.
