Swimming Notches 11th Straight Home Win

THE BASICS:

-Score: Assumption 157.5, Mount Holyoke 99.5

-Location: Worcester, Mass. (Plourde Pool)

-The Lead: The Assumption College swimming and diving team claimed its 11th consecutive home victory on Friday with a 157.5-99.5 win over the visiting Mount Holyoke Lions. The competition marks the first of back-to-back meets for the Hounds as they travel to Pace on Saturday.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

-Junior Victoria Weber (Augusta, Maine / Cony) broke another pool record in the 100 butterfly event. She claimed the victory in 1:00.95. Weber also won the 100 backstroke with her time of 1:01.71.

-Sophomore Carylyn Waite (Tampa, Fla. / Tampa Prep) won all three of her events. Her first individual win came in the 200 freestyle (1:59.05) and was followed by the 50 free (25.44). Her win in the 100 freestyle came immediately after her 50 free win, she touched the wall in 55.14.

-Freshman Morgan Nicholls (East London, South Africa / Clarendon) followed just behind Waite in both the 50 free and the 100 free with her times of 26.22 and 56.30, respectively.

-Freshman Ali Petrozza (North Andover, Mass. / Austin Preparatory School) led a trio of Hounds to top-three finishes in the 200 butterfly. She touched the wall in 2:14.86 for the victory, followed by junior Rachel Lanam (Sebastian, Fla. / Sebastian River) and sophomore Bry Veroneau (Belchertown, Mass. / Belchertown).

-Sophomore Niamh Morgan (Bettystown, Ireland / Sacred Heart School) took the top spot in the 200 backstroke with her time of 2:12.45. She was followed by Weber in second (2:16.41) and senior Caroline Flynn (North Attleboro, Mass. / Bishop Feehan) who finished third in 2:20.86.

-Assumption opened the competition with a win in the 200 medley relay. The foursome of Weber, Waite, sophomore Courtney Barr (Waltham, Mass. / Matignon) and junior Rachel Gagnon (Tolland, Conn. / Tolland) finished in a time of 1:52.77.

-Mount Holyoke's Cathleen Pruden claimed two pool records on the day in the 1,000 freestyle and the 200 IM. She breaks the record for the 1,000 free set in 2011 and takes Morgan's record in the 200 IM, which she set this season.

 

BEHIND THE RESULTS:

-Weber's record marks her fourth individual pool record in addition to her two relay records.

-The win marks Assumption's 11th consecutive victory at the Plourde Pool. The Hounds have not lost a dual-meet at home since Nov. 18, 2011.

 

UP NEXT:

-Assumption returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 31, as they travel to Pace in the second of back-to-back meets. The Hounds will compete against Pace and SUNY Purchase in a tri-meet Saturday.
