Three Records Fall in Swim Win Saturday

THE BASICS:

-Score: Assumption 156, Le Moyne 98

-Location: Worcester, Mass. (Plourde Pool)

-The Lead: Sophomores Niamh Morgan (Bettystown, Ireland / Sacred Heart School) and Carylyn Waite (Tampa, Fla. / Tampa Prep) of the Assumption swimming and diving team combined to break three Plourde Pool records on Saturday afternoon in the Hounds' 156-98 victory over the Le Moyne Dolphins. The trio of records marks the first time in program history that three pool records have fallen in the same meet.

-Assumption has now won its last 10 consecutive meets at home. The Hounds have not lost at the Plourde Pool since Nov. 18, 2011.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

-Morgan broke two pool records on the day in the 200 backstroke and the 200 IM. She claimed first in the 200 back with her time of 2:09.95 to top her own record of 2:10.29, which she set last season.

-Morgan's 200 IM record (2:13.54) tops that of senior captain Victoria Weber (Augusta, Maine / Cony), who clocked a 2:14.38 last season.

-Waite's record came in the 100 freestyle where she claimed first place overall with her time of 54.27. Her time breaks the previous record of 54.62, set in 2011. She led a trio of Hounds to finish in the top three spots in the 100 free. Waite was followed by sophomore Allie Wuerfl (Wayland, Mass. / Wayland) in 56.77, and Weber in 56.87.

-Waite also claimed first in the 50 free, clocking a time of 25.50, and in the 200 free (1:59.07). She was the first of three Hounds to finish back-to-back in the 200, followed by Morgan (2:03.43) and Wuerfl (2:04.72).

-Weber earned a first-place victory in the 100 backstroke on the day. The senior touched the wall in 1:01.52 and was followed by sophomore Courtney Barr (Waltham, Mass. / Matignon) in second (1:03.82).

-In the 1,000 freestyle, two-time NE-10 Rookie of the Week Shannon Quirk (Wakefield, Mass. / Wakefield Memorial) finished first with her time of 10:49.30. The freshman was followed by classmate Shannon Fitzsimmons (Andover, Mass. / Andover) in second (11:07.32) and junior Rachel Lanam (Sebastian, Fla. / Sebastian River) in third (11:17.87).

-Quirk also finished first in the 500 freestyle, registering a time of 5:25.43.

-Another trio of Hounds finished back-to-back to claim the top three spots in the 200 yard butterfly. Freshman Ali Petrozza (North Andover, Mass. / Austin Preparatory School) finished first with her time of 2:15.18 and was followed by juniors Tricia Lee (Norwood, Mass. / Norwood) (2:19.75) and Lanam (2:20.46).

-Junior McKenzie Johnson (Goffstown, N.H. / Goffstown) also earned a first-place victory for the Hounds in the 200 breaststroke. Johnson touched the wall in 2:35.58, nearly a full second before the second-place swimmer from Le Moyne.

-In relay competition, the Hounds opened the meet with a win in the 400 yard medley relay. The squad, consisting of Morgan, Weber, Waite and junior Rachel Gagnon (Tolland, Conn. / Tolland) finished in 4:06.61 and kicked off the meet with 11 points for the Hounds.

 

BEHIND THE RESULTS:

-Morgan now owns two pool records and three school records.

-Waite also holds three pool records, including two individual and one relay. She also claims three individual program records and three relay program records.

-Saturday's meet marks the first time in program history that three Plourde Pool records have been broken in the same meet.

-The win marks Assumption's 10th consecutive victory at the Plourde Pool. The Hounds have not lost a dual-meet at home since Nov. 18, 2011.

-The Greyhounds were ranked 15th in the nation this week in the CollegeSwimming.com DII National Poll.

 

UP NEXT:

-The Hounds will host Mount Holyoke on Friday, Oct. 30, at the Plourde Pool at 6:30 p.m. before traveling to Pace to compete in a tri-match against Pace and Saint Rose on Saturday, Oct. 31 at 12 p.m.

POST MEET:
