Swimming Competes at Catholic College Invitational

THE BASICS:

-Event: Catholic College Invitational

-Results: 4th of 6 teams

-Location: Chestnut Hill, Mass. (@ Boston College)

-The Lead: The Assumption College swimming and diving team placed fourth in the Catholic College Invitational on Saturday following two days of competition against five division I teams at Boston College. Sophomore Niamh Morgan (Bettystown, Ireland / Sacred Heart School) won all three of her races on the day against the tough competition, surpassing each of her times from last year.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

-The Hounds finished fourth overall in a field of five division I teams, including Siena. Assumption topped the Saints 543-395 after falling to the squad a week ago.

-Morgan claimed victories in all three of her races this weekend. She registered a time of 2:12.25 in the 200 IM, a 4:40.01 in the 400 IM and a 2:09.00 in the 200 backstroke in the tough field.

-Freshman Shannon Quirk (Wakefield, Mass. / Wakefield Memorial) posted second-place finishes in the 500 freestyle (5:13.40) and in the 1,000 freestyle (10:43.31). Quirk also registered a third top-five performance in the 200 freestyle, finishing fifth with her time of 1:59.89.

-Senior and reigning NE-10 Swimmer of the Week, Victoria Weber (Augusta, Maine / Cony), claimed a victory in the 100 backstroke with her time of 1:00.49. She also registered two additional top-five performances including fourth in the 200 IM (2:13.15) and fifth in the 100 butterfly (1:00.45).

-Weber also swam the opening leg of the 400 yard medley relay team, consisting of junior Rachel Gagnon (Tolland, Conn. / Tolland), freshman Ali Petrozza (North Andover, Mass. / Austin Preparatory School) and sophomore Carylyn Waite (Tampa, Fla. / Tampa Prep). The foursome finished second with its overall time of 4:06.84.

-Petrozza also performed well individually, clocking a time of 2:12.79 in the 200 butterfly for a third-place overall finish. 

-Waite also registered two individual, top-five performances in the 200 freestyle (3rd, 1:57.74) and the 100 freestyle (4th, 54.43). 

 

BEHIND THE RESULTS:

-Morgan's performance surpassed that of last year at the same meet. The sophomore registered faster times in each event in which she swam this season.

-Quirk's time in the 1,000 freestyle ranks the freshman 10th in the nation so far this season.

-Petrozza's time in the 200 butterfly ranks her 12th in the nation.

 

UP NEXT:

-Assumption is set to return to action on Saturday, Oct. 24, when they host Le Moyne for an NE-10 dual meet at the Plourde Pool at 3 p.m.
