- The Lead: An otherwise great and unexpected season came to an end on Sunday afternoon for the Assumption Greyhounds, losing 5-0 to the second-seeded Gannon Golden Knights in the second round of the NCAA tournament.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
-Ivan Manfredi scored two goals for the Golden Knights, while Joe Knox and Alex Lee added one goal and one assist each. Knox scored first for Gannon at the 7:47 mark of the first half. He beat a defender and snuck the ball into the lower post to give his team a 1-0 lead to begin the game. Manfredi stretched that lead to 2-0 going into the second half by scoring at the 27:39 mark on a header to the left post.
-The Golden Knights then struck for three more in the second half. Lee began the scoring at the 56:00 mark on a pass from Knox through the right side of the box and into the back of the net. At the 74:53 mark, Manfredi added his second goal of the game on a one-touch from the middle of the box. Tinashe Katsande made it 5-0 at the 77:20 mark on a bouncing ball into the back right corner of the net unassisted.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
-The Golden Knights outshot Assumption 13-11, while the Hounds held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks. Kevin Hernandez (San Juan, P.R. / Colegio San Jose) led the team with three shots.
-Sebastian Jimenez (Naples, Fla. / Gulf Coast High School) made three saves but fell to 13-8-0. Chandler Hallwood made four saves to improve to 18-2-0 and earn his eighth shutout of the season.
-The Hounds end their season after accomplishing many new records. They set the program's consecutive win streak of six games, won their first Northeast-10 playoff game and NE10 Championship in the same season, then went on to win their first NCAA tournament game in their first appearance in program history. The Hounds also tied the program record of most wins in a season by winning 13 games this year.
