Worcester, Mass. (Sept. 7) -- Assumption dropped its season opener in heavy rain to St. Thomas Aquinas College, 2-0, despite outshooting STAC 21-14.
The Hounds went into the half down two, despite matching STAC shot-for-shot in the first half. The Spartans capitalized on two of their five corner kicks in the first half, to take a lead into the half.
With a slight break in the rain in the second half, the Hounds out shot the Spartans 11-4, but couldn't find the back of the net.
Jose Paulo (Cranston, R.I./LaSalle Academy) led the Hounds with seven shots in the game.
Assumption goalkeeper Matt Wrenn (Windham, N.H./Tilton School) made five saves for the Hounds despite the wet conditions.
The loss moves the Hounds to 0-1 on the season, while the Spartans move to 2-0-1.
Assumption takes the field next on Sept. 13 against Saint Rose at the Multi-Sport Stadium at 7 p.m.
