No. 4 Norwich Scores Twice in Third to Defeat Men's Ice Hockey

THE BASICS: 

-Score: No. 4 Norwich 2, Assumption 1

-Records: No. 4 Norwich (9-2-0, 6-1-0 NEHC), Assumption (4-6-1, 3-3-0 NE10)

-Location: Northfield, Vt. (Kreitzberg Arena)

-The Lead: The No. 4 Norwich Cadets scored two unanswered goals in the third period to defeat the Assumption Greyhounds 2-1 in the opening round of Northfield Savings Bank Holiday Tournament. The Hounds will now face Salve Regina in the consolation game tomorrow, January 4, at 4 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

-The Cadets scored twice in the third period just 3:30 apart and kept the Hounds off the scoreboard in the final frame to secure the 2-1 win on Friday night. Brett Ouderkirk tied the game at one at the 4:26 mark. Carter Cowithrop scored the game-winner 3:30 later, putting his team up for good, 2-1. Cadets' goaltender Tom Aubrun then made eight saves in the final frame to preserve his team's lead.

-Assumption had taken an initial 1-0 lead at the 4:10 mark of the second period. Dante Maribito (Georgetown, Mass. / Phillips Academy (Prep)) scored on a nice, unassisted play for the first score of the game.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

-Norwich outshot the Hounds 34-19, while Maribitio led Assumption with four shots on net. Both teams went 0-for-2 while on the power play.

-Maribito's goal gives him five on the year and nine points. He has tallied at least one point in eight of his first 11 games this season and has now tallied five points in his last seven games.

-David Zulauf (Rochester, Mich. / Bridgton Academy (Prep)) made 32 saves on 34 shots but fell to 0-4-0 on the year. Abrun made 18 saves on 19 shots and improved to 9-2-0 on the year.

UP NEXT:

-The Hounds will conclude their performance in the Northfield Savings Bank Holiday Tournament tomorrow, January 4, in the consolation game against Salve Regina at 4 p.m. Salve Regina lost to Cortland 5-4 prior to the Hounds' game.
