Westfield St. Defeats Men's Ice Hockey in Overtime

THE BASICS: 

-Score: Westfield State 3, Assumption 2

-Records: Assumption (4-5-1, 3-3-0 NE10), Westfield State (5-3-3, 3-1-2 MASCAC)

-Location: Worcester, Mass. (Buffone Arena)

-The Lead: The Westfield State Owls scored three unanswered goals, including two within the final 30 seconds of regulation, to defeat the Assumption Greyhounds 3-2 on Thursday night in overtime.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

-The Hounds held a commanding 2-0 lead right up until the 19:30 mark of the third period. John Chamberlain (Amesbury, Mass. / Williston Northampton School)) scored first for the Hounds at the 16:28 mark of the second period on a shot over the shoulder of Westfield St.'s goaltender, while Christopher Stalmok (Paxton, Mass. / Boston Jr. Bruins (USPHL Premier)) scored in the third period at the 9:05 mark in the game to put the Hounds up 2-0.

-The Owls then began their comeback. Daniel Backstrom scored on a power play, assisted by Triston Theriot and Chris Melendez, with just 30 seconds left in the game and while on a 6-on-4 power play attempt, pulling their goalie while in the offensive zone. Then, just 25 seconds later and with five seconds left in the game, Justin Alves scored his team's second goal to tie the game at two, forcing the game to go into overtime.

-Backstrom sent the Owls home with the 3-2 overtime win at the 3:52 mark, scoring his second goal of the game unassisted.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

-The Hounds outshot Westfield State. 46-41 but fell short 3-2. Assumption went 0-for-8 while on the power play and the Owls went 1-for-4.

-Robbie Campbell (Raritan, N.J. / New England Stars (NA3HL)) made 38 saves for the Hounds, but fell to 0-1-0. Thierry Messervier made 44 saves for the Owls and improved to 4-3-1 on the year.

UP NEXT:

-The Hounds will be competing in the Northfield Savings Bank Holiday Tournament on January 3rd and 4th in Norwich, Vt. They are set to take on the Cadets on Friday, January 3rd at 7 p.m.
