Third Period Goal Ends Hounds Regular Season With 3-2 Loss

THE BASICS:

- Score: Post 3, Assumption 2

- Records: Post (10-15), Assumption (15-8-3, 7-5-3 NE10)

-Location: Shelton, Conn. (Sports Center of Connecticut)

-The lead: The Assumption Greyhounds dominated the offensive zone but fell victim to a third period goal by Evan Lugo that led to a 3-2 loss to the Post Eagles in the team's regular season finale.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

-Lugo, the Eagles' leading scorer, netted the game-winner 6:39 into the third period on a puck that trickled past Assumption goalie David Zulauf (Rochester, Mich. / Bridgton Academy (Prep)). It was the second of two unanswered goals by the Eagles to end the game. Lucas Smith scored the equalizing goal unassisted with just 10 seconds left in the second period.

-The Hounds peppered Eagles' goalie Brandon Brown with 21 shots throughout the third period and were turned away each time. They totaled more than 50 shots on net for the second straight night, netting 53 shots against Brown on Friday night in the first game of the weekend series and 57 shots on Saturday night.

-Seniors David Belbin (Shrewsbury, Mass. / Boston Jr. Bruins (USPHL Elite)) and Matt Damelio (Rochester, N.Y. / Northwood (Prep)) both scored for the Hounds. Belbin scored his first goal of the season to give the Hounds a 2-1 lead with 1:58 left in the second period while Matt Damelio gave the Hounds an initial 1-0 lead with a power play goal just 2:27 into the contest.

-Tyler Hackett scored his ninth goal of the season at the 9:37 mark of the second period while on the power play to tie the game at one.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

-Assumption outshot the Eagles 57-30. The Hounds went 1-for-5 on the power play while Post went 2-for-5.

-Zulauf made 36 saves on 39 shots and fell to 12-5-3 on the year. Brown made 55 saves on 57 shots and improved to 6-12. He now has a .951 save percentage in three games against the Hounds.

-After scoring against Post, Damelio ended his season as the team's leading point-getter, netting 10 goals and 12 assists for 22 points this season.

UP NEXT:

-The Hounds have now concluded their regular season. They were awarded the No. 4 seed in the NE10 conference playoffs due to a tiebreaker rule and will travel to No. 1 seeded Saint Anselm on Saturday, February 23, for a 1 p.m. start.
