Men's Basketball Grabs Non-Conference Victory Over Griffins

THE BASICS

-Score: Assumption College 91, Chestnut Hill College 69

-The Lead: Returning from an 11-day break, the Assumption College men's basketball team defeated the Griffins of Chestnut Hill College, 91-69, in a non-conference matchup on Thursday afternoon in Laska Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-After a back-and-forth opening five minutes of play, Assumption pulled ahead 17-9 on a three-pointer by first year Kani Glover (Brockton, Mass. / Catholic Memorial / Bridgton Academy) with 11:59 on the clock.

-The Griffins used a three from freshman Conor Regan to close the gap to three, 17-4, but Glover stepped behind the arc again to push Assumption back ahead by six with just over 10 minutes to play in the first (20-14).

-Red-shirt junior Malik Brown (Waldorf, Md. / Northpoint) added 10 points in the final eight minutes of play to give the Hounds the 42-23 lead heading into the halftime break. Brown finished the half with a team-leading 16 points and eight rebounds.

-Sophomore Cal Connelly (Rochester, N.H. / Spaulding / Tilton) opened up scoring in the second half with a three pointer for the hosts as they pulled ahead by 22.

-Sophomore Trevonn Pitts put up six points in the first two minutes of the second half to bring the Griffins within 17, 47-29.

-Assumption took their largest lead of the game at the 10:17 mark when a drive to the basket by freshman Saxon Thompson (Allen, Texas / The Episcopal School of Dallas / Wilbraham & Monson Acad.) put them up by 29. Isiah Gaiter (Meriden, Conn. / Sacred Heart High School / Huntington Prep) added 12 points in the second half and senior Branislav Vujadinovic (Belgrade, Serbia / St. Joseph) put up 11 in the final 20 minutes to help lead the Hounds to the 91-69 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

-Brown led Assumption with a double-double, putting up 19 points and grabbing 13 rebounds in the victory. He added three assists, two steals, and one block. Vujadinovic also put up 19 points for the Hounds. Gaiter and junior Matthew Kelly (North Potomac, Md. / Quince Orchard) finished with 13 and 12 points respectively.

-First year Scottie Spann led the Griffins with 24 points and eight rebounds. Pitts finished with 15 points to go along with three assists and sophomore Keyon Butler rounded out double-digit scoring with 11 points and seven rebounds in the setback.

-Assumption finished shooting 50% (33-66) from the field including a 38.7% (12-31) performance from behind the arc. Chestnut Hill shot 38.7% from the field (24-62) and 33.3% (7-21) from three-point range.

-The Hounds edged the Griffins in rebounding 40-39.

-Assumption forced Chestnut Hill to turn the ball over 16 times and turned those into 23 points.
