Strong Second Half Lifts Men's Basketball Over Concordia

THE BASICS

-Score: Assumption College 86, Concordia College 61

-Records: Assumption 3-0, Concordia, 0-3

-Location: Bronxville, N.Y.

-The Lead: The Assumption College men's basketball team defeated the Clippers of Concordia College on the road on Wednesday evening. The Greyhounds led by just three points at halftime before outscoring the Clippers 49-27 in the second half to take home the final 86-61 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Clippers junior forward Alex White Jr. scored the first points of the game before the Greyhounds put up back-to-back baskets including a three-pointer by junior Matthew Kelly (North Potomac, Md. / Quince Orchard). Concordia evened the score at 7-7, but a 9-2 run by the Greyhounds created a 16-9 advantage with 12:17 left in the first half.

-The Clippers used a 10-2 run to gain a 19-18 lead, only for Assumption to respond with a 10-0 run to flip the advantage back in their favor with a 33-23 lead at the 3:39 mark.

-Concordia ended the half on an 11-4 run to pull within one before the Greyhounds used a last-second jumper from red-shirt senior Malik Brown (Waldorf, Md. / Northpoint) to take the 37-34 lead heading into the halftime break.

-Assumption came out of the break strong with a 22-4 run. Kelly and senior Branislav Vujadinovic (Belgrade, Serbia / St. Joseph) put up nine points each in the run to give the Greyhounds the 59-38 advantage with 12:09 remaining in the contest.

-Concordia cut the separation to 17 at 69-52 off an 8-0 run, only for a 9-0 response by Assumption put the score at 78-52 with 3:09 on the clock. First year Thomas Whyte (Auckland, New Zealand / Auckland Grammar / St Thomas More School) made a three in the final minute of play to lift the Hounds to the final 86-61 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

-Freshman Dan Porcic led the hosts in scoring with 14 points on the night and added three rebounds, one steal, and one block. White Jr. pulled down a team-high 12 rebounds while Devon Sims added 13 points, five rebounds, and two steals. First year Dion Herrington dished out four assists with eight points and a steal for the Clippers.

-Kelly led the all scorers with 25 points for Greyhounds and added three steals. Vujadinovic put up a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Red-shirt senior Jordan White (Prince Frederick, Md. / Clinton Christian School) came off the bench with 15 points and six rebounds in 14 minutes of play. Brown also posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 defensive rebounds on the night. Senior Patrick Fleming (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. / Iona Prep) dished out a game-high seven assists for Assumption.

-The Clippers converted on 23-66 shots, going 4-22 from three-point territory and 11-14 from the free throw line.

-Assumption finished 32-69 from the field, 12-34 from distance and 10-15 from the free throw line.

-Concordia recorded 15 assists while Assumption had 20.

-Assumption held a 44-41 advantage in rebounds.

-Concordia committed 19 turnovers, resulting in 18 points for the visitors. Assumption had 13 turnovers, leading to eight points.

-Concordia' bench scored 12 points while the Greyhounds got 29 from its bench.

-Concordia recorded eight steals with four blocks while Assumption stole the ball 10 times with one block.
