Cal Connelly Named WACBA Rookie of the Year

WORCESTER, Mass. – Freshman Cal Connelly (Rochester, N.H. / Spaulding / Tilton) was recently selected as the Worcester Area College Basketball Association (WACBA) Rookie of the Year, while sophomore Matthew Kelly (North Potomac, Md. / Quince Orchard) earned Second Team honors.

Connelly was a four-time WACBA Rookie of the Week during the 2018-19 season and finished the season averaging 9.6 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game this season. He started all 28 games for the Hounds this season, shooting 39.6 percent from downtown and tying for the team lead with 55 three-point field goals. He also shot 84.6 percent from the free throw line. This marks the second straight year an Assumption player has won the award, as Kelly was honored last year.

Kelly was named to the WACBA Second Team after leading the Hounds this season. He averaged a team-high 15.2 points per game while shooting 47.4 percent from the floor and 36.9 percent from downtown. Kelly also averaged 2.9 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.2 steals per game in 34.2 minutes per game. He reached the 20-point plateau six different times over the course of the season.
