Field Hockey Advances to Championship After Defeating Stonehill 1-0

THE BASICS:

Score: Assumption 1, Stonehill 0

Records: Assumption (12-8, 7-5 NE10), Stonehilll (13-6, 10-2 NE10)

Location: Easton, Mass. (Coughlin Memorial Field)

The Lead: In the last 28 seconds, freshman Deirdre Burchill (Braintree, Mass./Braintree) scored off a feed from senior Allison Sheahan (Higganum, Conn./Haddmam-Killingworth) to defeat No. 2 Stonehill in the NE10 Semifinals to advance to the NE10 Championship on Sunday. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Both teams remained scoreless in the first half but the Assumption offense controlled the play out shooting the Skyhawks 8-2 and recording three more penalty corners.

 

- In the 42nd minute Kacie Smith picked up a loose ball to go on a break away and Hounds goaltender Sarah Bodzinski (Southwick, Mass./Southwick Tolland Regional) dove and blocked the attempt to keep her shutout. 

 

- In the last 28 seconds, Sheahan had an open lane on the right side. She dribbled towards the circle and crossed the ball in front where Burchill netted the feed to win the game 1-0. 

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

 

- The Hounds out shot Stonehill 13-6 and tallied three more penalty corners. This is Burchill's third game-winning goal this season.

 

- Bodzinski made one save in the win, while Skyhawk goaltender Sara Freeman made ten saves. 

 

UP NEXT:

- The Hounds are heading to Long Island, New York to face LIU Post in the NE10 Championship on Sunday at 1 pm.
