INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Assumption football team has been selected to the NCAA Division II Championship as the No. 3 seed in Super Region One. The Hounds will host a first round game against sixth seed California (Pa.) on Saturday, Nov. 18, as announced by the NCAA on Sunday evening.
Assumption will be making its third consecutive trip to the NCAA Championship, after capturing the program's second NE10 Title this season. The Hounds are 9-1 overall and coming off a 35-31 defeat on the final day of the regular season to Bentley. They are 1-2 in their previous two trips, with the lone victory coming at home against Bowie State in 2015.
The No. 6 seed Vulcans enter at 9-2 overall and on a five-game win streak following a 31-14 victory against East Stroudsburg this past weekend. They are averaging 33.5 points per game this season while opponents are soring 25.2 per contest. They are averaging 382.8 yards per game this season, with 282.3 coming through the air. Quarterback Michael Keir has thrown for 3,032 yards and 19 touchdowns, while Tom Greene has caught 62 passes for 1,032 yards and six scores.
The Hounds currently boast the nation's sixth highest scoring offense at 45.7 points per game, while also allowing just 11.7 points per game which is third in the nation. They also rank third nationally in sacks and first in redzone defense. Junior Deonte Harris (Baltimore, Md. / Archbishop Curley) has been dynamic for the team this year, leading the nation and tying an NCAA Division II record with five punt return touchdowns this year. Meanwhile, kicker Cole Tracy (Camarillo, Calif. / Newbury Park) leads the nation with 21 field goals and is first nationally among kickers with 119 points.
Indiana (Pa.) earned the top seed in Super Region One and will receive a bye, while Shepherd was selected as the No. 2 seed and will face No. 7 Findlay. Shippensburg claimed the fourth seed and will host No. 5 West Chester. To view the complete NCAA Division II bracket, click here.
