THE BASICS

-The Lead: The Assumption College baseball team completed the sweep of the Concordia College Clippers with an 8-4 victory today in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The Hounds improve to 3-5-1 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Concordia put up the first run in the first inning. Senior Joseph Impeduglia singled to right field to score junior Hermes Abreu.
-The Hounds put up two runs in the bottom of the second with an RBI single to right field by graduate student Philip Gaines (Cambridge, Mass. / Cambridge Rindge & Latin) and an RBI single up the middle by junior Dillon Zona (Shrewsbury, Mass. / Shrewsbury) for the 2-1 lead.
-Three more runs in the bottom of the third extended Assumption's lead to 5-1. Sophomore Connor Wironen (Leominster, Mass. / Saint Bernanrd's) led off with a single up the middle and senior R.J. Libby (Middleton, Mass. / Bishop Fenwick) followed with a double to left filed to put Wironen on third. Sophomore Jake Hamel (Uxbridge, Mass. / Saint John's) earned an RBI with a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Wironen (3-1). Senior Matt Schneider (Dalton, Mass. / Wahconah Regional) homered to left field for two RBIs and the 5-1 lead at the end of three innings.
-Wironen earned an RBI in the bottom of the fourth with a single to right that scored Gaines. Junior Dillon Koster (Woburn, Mass. / Woburn / Marist College) led off for Assumption in the fifth and singled to second base. He stole second to get into scoring position and came home on single through the left side by senior Matt Lonardo (Cranston, RI / Cranston / URI) for the 7-1 lead.
-The Clippers came back within three as they put up three runs in the top of the seventh, but Assumption used a unearned run in the bottom of the inning to hold onto a four-run lead, 8-4.
-Concordia put up one more run in the top of the ninth, but the Hounds held on for the final 8-5 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Schneider led the Hounds at the plate going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Gaines finished the day going 3-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Assumption combined for 13 total hits.
-Brendan Desaultes earned the win on the mound for Assumption, going 6.1 innings and striking out seven batters.
-The Clippers put up eight total hits, with two from Impeduglia and two from junior Blake Burgan.
-Senior Jacob Bannon fell to 0-1 on the season, pitching four innings for Concordia. He allowed nine hits, six runs scored, and struck out four batters.
