- The Lead: In a game that would decide who earned the final spot in the NE10 playoffs, the Assumption Greyhounds fell 10-0 to the Franklin Pierce Ravens.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

-Franklin Pierce did everything the Hounds had hoped to do on Saturday, mashing 10 runs on 17 hits, including three home runs, while pitchers Ryan Covelle and Evan Glew combined for the shutout on the mound. Covelle pitched the first five innings and struck out seven. He left the bases loaded in the top of the second and pitched to only one batter over the minimum through his final three innings while earning the win. Glew pitched the final four innings and earned the save, allowing only two hits and one walk while striking out three to combine for the shutout of the Hounds.

-The Hounds also trailed the entire game, beginning with a three-run first for the Ravens. John Mead started the scoring with a two-run homer off starter Mike Curtis (Wilmington, Mass. / Wilmington High School) while a double steal of second and home put Franklin Pierce up 3-0. It was the start of a tough day for the Assumption pitching staff as Curtis left after only four innings, giving up three runs on six hits and two walks. Cole Chudoba (Oxford, Conn. / Oxford High School) entered, and as the team's most productive starter, allowed Franklin Pierce to go up 5-0 after just 1 2/3 innings of work.

-Colton King (Westerly, R.I. / Moses Brown Prep) entered in the sixth after Chudoba allowed a triple to Brad Roberto. Nursing a 2.42 ERA and without giving up a run in his last 6.1 innings, King immediately allowed Roberto to score an RBI-double by Mead. Ling left after just 1 2/3 innings of work, giving up two runs on three hits. Mike Keinz (North Branford, Conn. / Notre Dame) pitched the final two outs for the Hounds but gave up two runs on two homers in the process.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

-Curtis earned the loss for the Hounds, falling to 4-2 on the year and earned his first loss since April 14. After earning the save in game two of yesterday's doubleheader, Covelle earned the win for the Ravens and improved to 6-4 on the year.

-R.J. Libby (Middleton, Mass. / Bishop Fenwick) and Alex Richardson (Rehoboth, Mass. / Bishop Feehan) had two hits each for the Hounds. The Hounds had seven hits in all, a farcry from the Ravens' 17, including three hits each from three different players. Roberto led the Ravens by going 3-for-4 with three runs, three RBIs, one walk and in need of only a double to complete the cycle. Mead and Ural Forbes also homered for the Ravens.

-Both teams entered the weekend tied for the final spot in the NE10 playoffs. By taking two out of three this weekend against the Hounds, Franklin Pierce earned the final spot while Assumption's season comes to an end. The Ravens will face No. 1 Southern N.H. on Tuesday.
