- The Lead: The Assumption Greyhounds broke free during the seventh inning of both games of the doubleheader with the Bloomfield Bears, scoring six runs in the first game and five in the second, to take two wins on Saturday at the New England Baseball Complex.
HOW IT HAPPENED: GAME ONE
- Holding on to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the seventh, the Hounds exploded for seven hits and six runs with two outs in the inning to extend their lead to 8-0. Alex Richardson (Rehoboth, Mass. / Bishop Feehan) started the rally with a double to center, followed by three singles and three doubles against three different pitchers to end the inning with an 8-0 lead.
- Bloomfield got one back in the next half inning, scoring on a groundout back to the mound that advanced the runners on second and third. The Hounds moved their lead back to eight at 9-1 in the bottom of the eighth when Richardson singled in Philip Gaines (Cambridge, Mass. / Cambridge Rindge & Latin), who tripled in the team's previous at-bat, to make it 9-1.
- Freshman MacGuire O'Sullivan (Durham, Conn. / Coginchaug Regional) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to secure the win for the Hounds, striking out one in the process. He piggybacked off Brendan Desautels (Holden, Mass. / Holy Name Central Catholic) who struck out one in a one-run eighth inning and starter Cole Chudoba (Oxford, Conn. / Oxford High School) who pitched seven shutout innings, striking out nine and allowing only four hiys and no walks.
-Derek Adamson (Chelmsford, Mass. / Chelmsford) doubled in the first to give the Hounds an initial 1-0 lead, while Hunter Tralli (Berlin, Conn. / Northwest Catholic) homered in the fourth to extend Assumption's lead to 2-0.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
-Tralli and Adamson led the team at the plate, going a combined 4-for-8 with three runs and four RBIs.
-Chudoba impressed in his first start of the season as he didn't allow a run or a walk in seven innings of work. He threw 62 strikes on 85 pitches (72.9%) and forced Kendon Strachan to leave runners on second and third in the top of the fifth inning, ending the inning untouched.
HOW IT HAPPENED: GAME TWO
-After climbing back to tie the game at four, the Hounds exploded again in the bottom of the seventh inning of game two, scoring five runs on six hits and one error. Adamson started the scoring when he came home on a wild pitch, giving the Hounds an initial 6-5 lead. Assumption then connected on four RBI-singles to take a 9-4 lead before flying out to end the inning.
-Manny PegueroMelo (Boston, Mass. / Xaverian) shut down Bloomfield the rest of the way. He pitched 3 1/3 innings in relief and allowed only one run on four walks and no hits to earn the win. PegueroMelo walked the first batter he faced with the bases loaded in the top of the fifth to put Bloomfield up 4-2, but then retired the side in order in the sixth and seventh innings and only allowed Jason Holquin to score from third on a steal at second in the eighth.
-PegueroMelo's performance allowed the Hounds to tie the game at four in the bottom of the fifth on back-to-back RBI-singles from R.J. Libby (Middleton, Mass. / Bishop Fenwick) and Adamson. They also added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth to go on top 11-5 before PegueroMelo gave way to Colton King (Westerly, R.I. / Moses Brown Prep), who retired the side in the ninth.
-Assumption had tied the game at two in the fourth inning by scoring two runs on three hits that included a double by Adamson.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
-Libby went 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs, a double, one RBI and one walk. Dillon Koster (Woburn, Mass. / Woburn / Marist College) went 3-for-4 as well with three RBIs, one run and one walk. Adamson went 2-for-5 with two runs, a double and two RBIs.
-The Hounds tagged Bloomfield's bullpen for nine runs on 11 hits and five walks in four innings of work and against five different pitchers.
