Greyhounds Drop Doubleheader to New Haven

Worcester, Mass. (April 28) -- The Assumption College baseball team was swept by the New Haven Chargers in a conference double-header Saturday afternoon at H.L. Rocheleau Field. Junior Shane Keddy (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Tech) and senior Travis Smith (Coventry, R.I./Bishop Hendricksen) each had a pair of hits on the day to lead the way for the Greyhounds.

In the opener the Greyhounds fell to the Chargers 13-2. Leading the way for the Chargers was Cory Carr who went 4-6 with a pair of RBI's and a run. On the hill for Assumption was Junior Dan Bradley (Moodus, Conn./Nathan Hale Ray) matched up against New Haven's Mike Aquilino.

The bats were quiet through the first three and half innings before Assumption found their way onto the board in the bottom of the fourth. The scoring started with a line drive single to right field off the bat of Smith to bring in sophomore Michael Filice (South Salem, N.Y./John Jay CR) from third. Two batters later, junior Joe Lopes (Warwick, R.I./Bishop Hendricksen) made the score 2-0 with a sacrifice fly to right field to score Keddy.

New Haven battled back to take a 3-2  lead in the top of the fifth with a double to left center by Chris DeMorais to bring in the first run and a two-run triple to left center by Ryan Brockett to put them in front 3-2.

After a scoreless bottom half of the fifth, the Chargers broke it open in the sixth with an eight run inning, off eight hits and three Greyhound errors. It began with a double to deep left by Joe Romanelli that brought in the runner from first. DeMorais then doubled down the first base line to make the score 5-2. A line drive single up the middle by Carr brought in DeMorais to make it 6-2. Carr moved up to third on wild pitch and an errant throw by the catcher. He then scored on a triple by Brockett to right field. The next batter, Zack Collett singled in the run on a line drive off the pitcher. With the bases loaded and two outs, the tenth batter of the inning, Romanelli, hit a line drive over the shortstop's head that cleared the bases after an error by the left fielder. After two calls to the pen and 14 batters, the Greyhounds were finally able to get out of the sixth trailing 11-2.

The Chargers added on a pair of runs in the top of the eighth with a back to back singles by Steven Clout and Carr to push the score to 13-2 where it would stay until the final out.

Picking up the win for the Chargers was Mike Aquilino going five innings giving up two runs on two hits and four walks while striking out two. With the win he improved his record to 4-2. Henry Hirsch got his first save going the last four innings allowing only one hit while fanning four. Bradley suffered the loss, putting his record at 4-5 on the season following a five inning performance allowing five runs on nine hits and a walk while striking out four.

Game two began with a triple by Steven Clout to the deep left center field, but he was left stranded at third as the Greyhound starter senior Kevin Maynone (Saugerties, N.Y.) was able to set down the side following that.

Keddy led off the first inning for Assumption with a double that one-hopped the left field fence. He was also left on third as New Haven's starter Joey Royer was able to record three straight outs to get out of the jam.

New Haven scored first in the top of the second. Brendan O'Reilly singled in two between short and third in the second with the bases loaded. Following a fielder's choice, Cory Carr brought in the third run of the inning with a single to left.

New haven put up a four spot in the top of the third to put the score at 7-0. Brendan Buckley singled between third and short to bring in the first run. Romanelli followed that up with a double down third base line bringing in another run.  After a walk, O'Reilly got two more RBI when he singled up the middle to expand the Charger's lead to seven.

Leading off the top of the fifth, Chris DeMorais took a fastball deep over the right-centerfield fence to increase the Charger's lead to 8-0. New Haven added an extra run in the frame on a 6-4-3 double play turned by the Greyhounds. After five innings New Haven led 9-0.

First year player Kelvin Sims (Manchester, Conn./East Catholic) led off the bottom of the fifth with a double down the left field line. He moved up to third on a wild pitch and later scored on a wild pitch, breaking the shutout.

Each team added a run in the seventh inning to make the score 10-2. Cory Carr knocked in Steven Clout in the top of the seventh with a sacrifice fly to right field for the Charger's 10th run of the game.  Sophomore Matt Consigli (Whitinsville, Mass./Northbridge) drove in the Greyhound's second run with an RBI groundout to first base, scoring Smith who led the inning off with a double. New Haven would add one in the top of the eighth on an RBI groundout to third base to make the score 11-2.
