Greyhounds Use Four-Run Ninth to Sting Yellow Jackets

Springfield, Mass. (April 17) -- The Assumption College baseball team used a four-run ninth inning to shock American International College in a 10-7 victory at AIC Park on Tuesday afternoon.

The Greyhounds used three home runs, one each by Ysander Figueroa (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Tech), Shane Keddy (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Tech), and Tim Quinn (Paxton, Mass./Saint John's), to power past the Yellow Jackets. The Greyhounds also took advantage of two Yellow Jacket errors in the ninth and put four runs on the board to carry a three-run lead into the bottom of the inning.

Quinn enjoyed a four-hit day, and Keddy went 3-for-5 in the victory with three RBI. Nick Napoli (Medford, Mass./Boston College) and Matt Consigli (Whitinsville, Mass./Northbridge) each had two-hits for the Greyhounds.

Sophomore Cody Rocha (Fall River, Mass./B.M.C. Durfee) pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless baseball out of the bullpen to pick up the victory.

Assumption jumped out to a two-run lead when Keddy hit his second home run of the season in the top of the first inning. The Yellow Jackets cut the lead in half with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame.

The Greyhounds used the long ball to extend the lead to three, 4-1, as Figueroa added a two-run bomb of his own in the top of the second. Quinn led off the top of the third with his second home run of the season, extending the Greyhound lead to four.

Assumption added another run to its lead on an RBI double by Consigli in the top of the fifth, giving the Greyhounds a five-run cushion, 6-1.

The Yellow Jackets came right back with two runs in each of the next three innings, to take a 7-6 lead into the top of the eighth inning.

After a scoreless inning, the Greyhounds took advantage of sloppy defense by American International.  Freshman Kelvin Sims (Manchester, Conn./East Catholic) led off the inning and reach on an error by the shortstop. Back-to-back singles tied up the game, and the second Yellow Jacket error of the inning advanced the runners to second and third. Consigli added his second double of the game, driving in two Greyhounds runs. Following consecutive outs, Keddy drove an RBI single up the middle, scoring Consigi, giving the Greyhounds a three-run lead, 10-7.

Rocha pitched a scoreless ninth inning to close the door on another Yellow Jacket rally. Assumption improves to 9-19 with the win, including a 3-6 mark in the Southwest Division.

Assumption will return to action on Wednesday, April 18, as the team will play host to Merrimack College. The game will begin at 3:30 p.m. in Worcester, Mass.
