Greyhounds Split Doubleheader With Adelphi

Worcester, Mass. (April 14) -- The Assumption College baseball team split a doubleheader with Adelphi University at Rocheleau Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Greyhounds took the first game in walk off fashion, as centerfielder Ysander Figueroa (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Tech) hit a two-run game-winning home run in the bottom of the ninth to give the Greyhounds an 8-6 victory. In the second game, the Greyhounds dropped a 10-6 final, despite holding a 6-5 lead after seven innings.

In the first game, Figueroa went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored as the Greyhounds recorded 15 hits. Michael Filice (South Salem, N.Y./John Jay CR),Shane Keddy (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Tech)Tim Quinn (Paxton, Mass./Saint John's)Joe Lopes (Warwick, R.I./Bishop Hendricksen)Nick Napoli (Medford, Mass./Boston College) and Matt Consigli (Whitinsville, Mass./Northbridge) each had two hit games in the opener.

Adelphi jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one inning, but Assumption took the lead back, 3-2 with a three-run bottom of the second inning. Consigli had a two-run triple, followed by a Figueroa sacrifice fly, for the scoring in the frame.

The Panthers evened the score up in the top of the third inning on an RBI single, but Assumption again took the lead back with a three-run fifth inning. Lopes had a two-run double in the inning, while Sims added an RBI for Assumption.

Adelphi again evened the score with a three-run seventh inning, but Figueroa gave the Greyhounds the victory with a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning, driving in Consigli for the game-winning runs. Cody Rocha (Fall River, Mass./B.M.C. Durfee) picked up the victory for the Greyhounds after working 2.2 innings of one-run baseball, striking out two Panthers in relief.

In game two, Sims, Lopes, and Consigli each recorded two hits as the Greyhounds offense was limited to nine hits in the game. The Greyhounds took a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning on a three-run home run by Filice.

Assumption was outscored 5-1 over the final two frames as Adelphi went on to pick up the 10-6 victory.

Assumption falls to 8-18 on the season with the loss and will return to face Adelphi for a third time on Sunday, April 15. The game will begin at 1 p.m. at Rocheleau Field.
