Greyhounds Drop 9-5 Final to Saint Anselm College

Manchester, N.H. (April 5) -- The Assumption College baseball team lost to Saint Anselm College, 9-5, at Sullivan Park on Thursday afternoon.

The Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead in the sixth inning, as Assumption took advantage of a Saint Anselm error following a double by junior Shane Keddy (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Tech)

Assumption extended the lead to five with a four-run eighth inning, as The Greyhounds capitalized on three free passes issued by Hawks pitching. Following a Keddy fly out to center field, senior third baseman Travis Smith (Coventry, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) walked. Freshman Kelvin Sims (Manchester, Conn./East Catholic) singled to left center field, advancing Smith to second base. Joe Lopes (Warwick, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) walked to load the bases, bringing Nick Napoli (Medford, Mass./Boston College) to the plate. He doubled, driving in two Greyhounds runs, pushing the lead to 3-0.

Following a strikeout, Michael Smith (Old Lyme, Conn./Old Lyme) advanced to first base after getting hit by a pitch to load the bases for the second time in the inning. Centerfielder Ysander Figueroa (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Tech) reached on an infield single, scoring Lopes. The next batter, designated hitter Michael Filice (South Salem, N.Y./John Jay CR) took the third free pass of the inning to extend the Assumption lead to five.

In the bottom of the frame, the Saint Anselm offense exploded, scoring nine runs, leading to the final score.

Assumption starter Ben Hastings (Norton, Mass./Norton) worked four innings of one-hit ball, before giving way to the bullpen in a scoreless tie.

The Greyhounds fall to 6-14 on the season, while Saint Anselm improves to 12-15-1.

Assumption will return to the field on Monday, April 9 for a Northeast-10 Conference game against Bentley University. The game will begin against 3:30 p.m. in Waltham, Mass.
