Greyhounds Earn Split Against Bentley and Rollins

Winter Park, Florida (March 4) -- The Assumption College baseball team avenged a loss to Bentley yesterday, beating the Falcons 7-6 in walk-off fashion before falling to Rollins, 3-0, in the night cap on Sunday.

After Bentley rallied from down three to take a one-run lead by scoring a run in the top of the eighth inning, Assumption scored a run in each of the final two innings, to capture its first victory of the season.

Senior catcher Tim Quinn (Paxton, Mass./Saint John's) lead off the bottom of the ninth inning and reached base after getting hit by a pitch, and Travis Smith (Coventry, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) reached on an error by the shortstop. A fielder's choice advanced both runners, and Michael Smith (Old Lyme, Conn./Old Lyme) provided the heroics with a walk-off single, which scored Quinn.

Senior pitcher Nick Peters (Natick, Mass./Catholic Memorial) pitched six innings of one-hit ball giving up three runs, but only one was earned, while striking out three. With the score locked up at two in the bottom of the sixth and two men on base for the Greyhounds, Matthew Consigli (Whitinsville, Mass./Northbridge) stepped to the plate with one out and delivered a two RBI single, to give Assumption a 4-2 lead. Following a strikeout, center fielder Ysander Figueroa (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Tech) had an RBI single of his own to extend the lead to three.

Peters would exit holding a 5-2 lead, after allowing his first hit of the day to lead off the top of the seventh inning. Bentley went on to score three runs in the seventh, and one in the eighth to take the lead and set up the heroics for Smith.

In the second game of the day, Assumption got a strong start from Ben Hastings (Norton, Mass./Norton) who scatted seven hits and two runs over 5.1 innings of work, but the Greyhounds could not get it going offensively, on the way to a 3-0 shutout loss.

Assumption moves to 1-4 after the pair of games, and will return to the diamond on Friday, March 9 for a doubleheader against Northeast-10 Conference rival Stonehill College. The first pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
