Six Hounds Named to NE-10 Winter Academic All-Conference Teams

Mansfield, Mass. (May 2) -- Six Assumption College student-athletes have been named to the 2016 Northeast-10 Winter Academic All-Conference Teams, as announced by the league office. These teams were voted on by a panel of Northeast-10 Conference administrators.

The winter honorees included ice hockey players Ryan Gomez (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) and Stephen Picard (Enfield, Conn./Loomis Chaffee), women's swimmer Victoria Weber (Augusta, Maine/Cony), indoor track and field athletes Rachel Avard (Manchester, N.H./Manchester West) and Gwen Sawyer (North Yarmouth, Maine/Greely) and women's basketball captain Kelly Conley (Ellington, Conn./Ellington).

"I would like to congratulate these six student-athletes who have been recognized for their outstanding academic and athletic excellence," said Nick Smith, director of athletics. "They have set a great example for all of the Assumption College student-athletes and we are very proud of their accomplishments."

Gomez, an accounting and finance major with a 3.6 GPA, was a 2016 Northeast-10 Second Team All-Conference performer and a two-time member of the Northeast-10 Weekly Honor Roll. Appearing in 24 games, he finished second on the team with 28 points on eight goals and 20 assists and ended the season ranked second in the Northeast-10 in points and first in assists. In addition, Gomez tallied a pair of power-play goals as the team advanced to the Northeast-10 Tournament semifinals.

Picard is an economics major with a 3.72 GPA who was a one-time Northeast-10 Player of the Week and a one-time member of the NE-10 Weekly Honor Roll. Finishing with 11 points on eight goals and three assists in 20 games, Picard was sixth in the Northeast-10 Conference in goals per game.

Weber, an elementary education and English major with a 3.35 GPA, was a three-time Northeast-10 Conference Swimmer of the Week who helped lead the team to their third straight league title. Posting three top-three finishes at the Northeast-10 Championship, she captured 14 individual events throughout the season and was a member of five winning relay teams. In addition, Weber ended her Assumption career as the program's all-time leading point scorer with 2,235 points.

Avard, who is now an Academic All-Conference honoree in cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field, is a biology major with a 3.88 GPA.  Finishing sixth in the 5,000 meters at the Northeast-10 Championship, she also ran a season-best time of 5:27.96 in the mile at BU. Avard holds in the Assumption school record in the 3,000 meters as she set that mark at the 2015 New England Championships. In addition, she also posted a perfect 4.0 GPA in the Spring 2015 semester.

Sawyer is a political science major with a 3.51 GPA who was named as a USTFCCCA All-Region performer in both the shot put and weight throw. At the New England Championship, she captured the Division II title with a school-record throw of 42 feet, 1.5 inches that also placed her sixth overall amongst all divisions. Sawyer finished second in the shot put and fourth in the weight throw at the Northeast-10 Championship, including a school-record toss of 47 feet, 9.75 inches in the weight throw.

A two-time team captain, Conley is a biology major who holds a 3.84 GPA as a four-year member of the women's basketball team. Named as a 2016 Northeast-10 Honorable Mention All-Conference selection, this marks the second straight season she has earned Academic All-Conference accolades. Starting all 27 games, Conley finished second on the team in scoring at 10.5 points per game while shooting 81.4 percent from the free throw line and leading the team with 31 steals.
